Get out of the city with this Wolf Watch and Day Hike in the Gap adventure. This journey begins with a spectacular, jaw-dropping wolf watch near the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area. Upon arrival to the wolf preserve, we will enjoy a 1/2 mile walk to the observation area where we will suddenly find ourselves in the center of and surrounded by three wolf packs—packs of Tundra, Timber and Arctic wolves.
We will be accompanied by the people who raised and still care for the wolves and they will educate us about the social structure of wolf packs, their eating habits, their interaction with man and many other interesting facts. While in the observation area we will be able to watch the wolves play, interact with each other and maybe even hear them howl. The wolves’ howl echoing through the mountains of the Delaware Water Gap is simply amazing.
Following the wolf watch, we will enjoy a moderate hike (approximately 4 miles) in the nationally designated Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area. We will hike along the contours of Kittatinny Ridge where Native Americans once flourished. The glorious hike leads us to the glacial lake of Sunfish Pond, designated as a National Natural Landmark. After surrendering to the serenity and beauty of the lake, we will connect with and hike out on the famous Appalachian Trail, a trail approximately 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine.
